"His France—urban, northern, provincial, pedestrian, noisy, unpuritanical, festive—was unlike, and predicated upon, one other France: bureaucratic, reliable, suburban, secure, rule—crazy, scared."

— Robert Darnton, the hot York overview of Books

"Cobb was once a real historian of existence 'from below', utilizing archival facts to carry alive the reality—and the suffering—of usual people’s life. His essays approximately his personal existence and instances have a similar loving cognizance to aspect, to the feel of quotidian occasions, to genuine humans and actual feeling."
— Geoffrey Wheatcroft, New Statesman
